The Best Couch for Big and Tall Guys: What Actually Fits

Your feet hang off the end. Your knees end up in your chest. The cushions give up by Thursday. Big guy, you're not the problem. The couch is.

Jerry is six-foot-five and four hundred pounds, so he's been there. He has sat on couches that were built for somebody's little cousin. Here's what actually matters when you're big, tall or both.

1. Length: can you lie all the way down?

Lay down on it, don't just sit. A tall guy needs a couch longer than he is, plus room for a pillow. If you're over six feet, look for something over seven feet long. A sectional with a chaise gives you the most stretch-out room.

2. Seat depth: the most ignored number

Most couches have shallow seats, so big and tall guys end up perched on the edge. A deep seat lets your whole leg rest on the cushion and your back actually reach the back. Deep, lounge-style seats are made for sinking in instead of sitting up straight.

3. Cushion that doesn't quit

Cheap foam goes flat fast under real weight. High-density foam holds its shape longer. Jerry's couches are built from high-density foam for exactly that reason.

4. Ask for the weight rating, every time

Any honest seller should tell you how much a couch is rated to hold. If they can't, keep walking. We're confirming ours with our factory and will post it before launch. We won't guess, and you shouldn't buy from anyone who does.

5. Getting it through the door

Big couches and narrow doorways are enemies. A couch that ships compressed in one box skips that fight completely. Carry the box in, cut the wrap, and it expands right where it's going to live.

The big guy checklist

Jerry's couches: about 118 inches long, deep, plush high-density foam, and delivered in one box.

Questions

What is the best couch for a big and tall man?

Look for a couch longer than your height, with a deep lounge-style seat, high-density foam cushions and a published weight rating. A sectional with a chaise gives the most room to stretch out.

How long should a couch be for a tall person?

Long enough to lie flat with a pillow. For someone over six feet, that usually means over seven feet long. Jerry's Three-Seater is about 118 inches.

What should I ask before buying a couch if I'm heavy?

Ask for the rated weight capacity and the foam density. If a seller can't answer, don't buy.
